LGBT History Month Resources
LGBT
History Month is an opportunity for everyone to learn
more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender people in Britain and Northern Ireland.
The aim of the event is to educate
and inform not just LGBT people, but everyone, about
LGBT heritage, and begin to break the silence which
has for so long surrounded the issue.
The organisers believe that
this silence breeds ignorance and distorted imaginings,
which bring about at best embarrassment; at worst, hostility
and hate crimes.
They hope to help to end the
sense of isolation and bewilderment felt by so many
LGBT people, particularly the young, and make homophobic
bullying unacceptable. By educating people in a positive
manner, LGBT History Month also hopes to help dispel
the anxiety and confused rage that drive some people
to aggressive behaviour.
Below are some helpful resources
associated with LGBT History Month:
- 'Our
Story'
From 620bc to 2005,
a document detailing events and people who have shaped
the LGBT Community, produced by PCS Proud.
- LGBT
History Month website
Contains details of
events taking place for LGBT History month, and also
a range of resources including advice and guidance
for schools on tackling homophobic bullying, and teaching
about LGBT issues.
