Volunteer!

Could you spare some time to help with the work of Camden LGBT forum? This page contains details of current and upcoming volunteering opportunities; do get in touch if you think you could help out.

Operation Norweigan: Hampstead Heath Outreach
Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 April 2005

The Forum is embarking on a new round of work for Operation Norweigan, the project we operate in partnership with the Metropolitan Police to reduce violent and homophobic hate crime on Hampstead Heath.

The operation aims to encourage men who cruise for sex on Hampstead Heath to report any crimes they might experience, and to provide reassurance that the police are approachable, sensitive and serious about homophobic crime, demonstrating that Police presence around the heath is for their benefit.

In addition, Clash, the health outreach project of Camden and Islington Health Promotion Service, will be distributing advice and information from their specially designed bus, making the area a one-stop shop for men who cruise on the Heath to find out how to keep themselves safe.

Previous work on the operation brought about the arrest of 'Goldtooth,' a serial violent attacker on the Heath.

The operation runs from 6pm to 2am, and will be sited as usual in the car park of Jack Straw's Castle. The Police have provided a Portakabin as a base for Officers and volunteers, and the site will be bright and appealing to encourage people to come and talk to the Forum and the Police.

This important work is dependent on the help of our volunteers. If you could possibly spare some time on Saturday or Sunday night to come along and assist, whether for the whole evening or just for an hour or two, your help would be extremely valuable.

Don't worry if you have never participated in any outreach work before; we will brief you on the work and provide you with information to enable you to answer queries. If you can help, please contact us as soon as possible either by emailing forum.admin@camdenlgbtforum.org.uk or by telephoning us on 020 7470 8760.

This project is one of the ways in which the Forum can bring about a significant, positive change in the borough, and proof if anyone were to need it of how partnership working can reduce crime and forge links between the community and the police.

Camden Venue Outreach
We are currently seeking volunteers to help co-ordinate out monthly outreach sessions at bars and other venues in the borough. If you could spare some time to help organise this extremely important aspect of our work, it would be hugely appreciated. Outreach is vital to our knowledge of the LGBT Community in Camden, and also to establishing our presence with LGBT people. If you think you might be able to help in this role or would like more information about the work, please do get in touch with Hilary at forum.admin@camdenlgbtforum.org.uk or 020 7470 8760.

Seeking translators!
We are currently beginning the process of supplying our printed leaflets and information in a series of different languages in order to reach as many people and groups in the borough as possible.

We are looking for volunteers who might be able to help translate literature into the following languages: Somali, Bengali, Sylheti, French, Amharic, Swahili, Afrikaans, Amharic, Farsi, Arabic, Spanish and Albanian.

If you think you might be able to help or would like more information about the work, please do get in touch with Hilary at forum.admin@camdenlgbtforum.org.uk or 020 7470 8760.
